This all worked out so well because I discovered a relatively untapped industry that most of my friends didn’t know about and weren’t looking into – the power supply industry, and more specifically power plant jobs in Hawaii. A few of these positions include: meter mechanic, boiler operator, janitor, secretary, meter reader, payroll clerk, lineman, vehicle attendant, and many other great positions are available.

What really caught my eye is the fact that a large portion of the workforce of utility companies (known as

the electrical supply industry) was at or very near retirement age. They are losing about twenty percent of their workforce in just a few years, and the exodus of retirees is creating a worker shortage . That means they’ve created numerous career positions that pay at the upper end of the scale considering job salaries for people who don’t have a four year degree. That fact caused me to focus on getting one of the many power plant operator jobs that became available each time an older employee retired.

The power supply industry pays well because they provide a lot of on the job training, so once you have solid experience, they can’t afford to lose you. So they pay well enough to keep their employees from looking elsewhere.

So once I discovered the potential of this industry, I realized that I could actually earn fifty thousand dollars a year without a degree. Ironically, by focusing on what was possible – a really good salary, I ended up with a GREAT salary. So when looking at job salaries, it never hurts to be informed.
