Always frame the reason in terms of you seeking something bigger, better, or different. As we get older, we all develop new preferences, and there is nothing wrong with heading in a new direction. If you were laid off or “downsized” don’t be shy about giving that honest response, it’s very common these days and is nothing to be ashamed of.

People who take responsibility for their mistakes are given second chances. But people who shrug off responsibility and instead cast blame rarely get second chances.

Job interview questions really are about learning more about you, giving you a chance to “sell” them on why they should hire you, and making sure you are a good fit to their organization, so with that in mind:

This is your opportunity to shine. It is simply unforgivable to ever go into a job interview without having done some research on the company. What products do they make? What do they sell, to whom, in what markets? How many employees do they have? Have they gotten good recent favorable press, awards, or industry recognition?

Do some Internet research and build a short profile in your mind of this employer. If this question comes up, share what you know, mention that you have a favorable impression of the company and would like to join their ranks to make them even stronger. If you skip your research on this one, and the question comes up, I can almost guarantee you will not get the job.
